What is Celexa used for? Celexa is used to treat depression.

Who should not take Celexa? You should not take Celxa if you are currently taking certain other antidepressant medications in the group called monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine. You should stop taking MAO inhibitors 2 weeks before starting Celexa, and you should be off Celexa for 2 weeks before starting on MAO inhibitor medication.

General Precautions with Celexa:

  • Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how you will react to Celexa.
  • Drinking alcohol while being treated with Celexa is not recommended.

If you currently have, or have a history of the following conditions, your health care provider will evaluate you to decide if Celexa is right for you:

  • Mania
  • Seizures
  • Liver disease
  • Severe kidney problems

What should I tell my doctor or health care provider?

  • Review all medications that you are taking with your health care provider, including those that you take without a prescription, as there may be interactions.
  • Tell your health care provider if you are trying to become pregnant, are already pregnant, or are breast feeding.

What are some possible side effects of Celexa? (This is NOT a complete list of side effects reported with Celexa. Your health care provider can discuss with you a more complete list of side effects.)  

The most common side effect with Celexa is sexual problems in male patients.

Some other possible side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Sleepiness
  • Increase in sweating
